Every two years, Manomet presents a $2,000 award to an individual or organization from Latin America or the Caribbean that has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to shorebird conservation—much like Pablo Canevari did before he passed away in March of 2000. This year, we congratulate Dr. Sandra Giner as the 2024 Pablo Canevari Award Winner!
Dr. Sandra Giner is a Venezuelan biologist and professor at the Universidad Central de Venezuela. She is a pioneer in shorebird research and conservation in her country, and has coordinated the National Shorebird Conservation Group of Venezuela. In leading this group, she helped spearhead a proposal that resulted in the designation of the first site of International Importance of the Western Hemispheric Shorebird Reserve Network in the country, Salina Solar Los Olivitos.
Dr. Giner has also been instrumental in training individuals from different regions of the country in shorebird conservation practices, including remote areas such as La Guajira in Venezuela, where she has influenced the integration of representatives of indigenous ethnic groups. These groups have in turn been very active as volunteers for shorebird surveys in the towns on the west coast of the country. Sandra is so dedicated to her life’s work in this arena that she also promotes shorebird conservation projects with her own resources. Congratulations to Dr. Giner, and we look forward to your continued work in the field!
