Overview

Today, shorebirds are undergoing one of the most dramatic declines of any bird group worldwide. Recent studies show that we have lost more than one-third of all coastal shorebirds since 1970. To stabilize and rebuild shorebird populations and safeguard their vital habitats, Manomet has launched the Coalitions for Shorebird Conservation to accelerate and support targeted conservation efforts at 13 of the most important shorebird sites in the Americas. At each location, we are improving the quality and quantity of critical shorebird habitats and increasing local capacity for conservation action.

Shorebirds face many challenges, including habitat loss and degradation, human disturbance, unregulated and illegal hunting, increasing predation, and climate change. These challenges are greater than any single organization can address alone. That means the most important thing we can do to safeguard shorebird populations is to build coalitions that work together to address these threats. Coalitions for Shorebird Conservation connects site-based and hemisphere-scale conservation planning and action. Through a targeted approach to site conservation, Manomet is helping these sites bridge the divide between local and global action, to inspire and to inform coordinated and comprehensive shorebird conservation in the Americas.

Shorebirds are some of the most migratory animals on the planet and need concerted and international management actions implemented by many partners, spread over an enormous geography, all working towards a collective vision. By facilitating an exchange of experiences between the sites while also integrating local efforts into broader conservation initiatives, our team is working with talented local partners at 13 priority sites representing shared shorebird species. Affected by a mix of common threats, these sites will benefit from a comprehensive approach focusing on:

Building capacity in local organizations to help them deliver more effective conservation actions;
Helping partners identify, prioritize, and then address the greatest threats, such as habitat loss, unleashed dogs and disturbance from beach-driving;
Assessing the value of ecosystem services to identify opportunities to improve human wellbeing through enhanced conservation at sites;
Working with partners to measure the response of shorebird populations following the implementation of management actions.

To conduct this work, we are engaging communities and leaders to build coalitions for conservation, create new opportunities to take action, and advocate for greater protection and conservation measures. Local partners include conservation organizations, government agencies, funders, businesses, ranchers, farmers, and community members. By working with, and learning from our site-partners, together we will address the specific needs of shorebirds at these 13 critical locations.

Site-targeted efforts will be scaled nationally and internationally through close collaboration with other conservation initiatives and groups to enhance the capacity to achieve common conservation goals.

Partners

With support from the BAND Foundation, Bobolink Foundation, R. Howard Dobbs Jr. Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Conservation Partners Program in partnership with the USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, Manomet’s Shorebird Recovery Program is working to conserve and effectively manage critical habitats for shorebirds at 13 key sites in the Americas.

By building connected networks of sites that focus on addressing the barriers to conservation locally, while simultaneously sharing knowledge and lessons learned across geopolitical boundaries, Manomet and its partners seek to scale-up actions to deliver transformative solutions across the entire lifecycle of migratory shorebirds.

Goals

To catalyze actions at 13 sites to increase the health and number of shorebirds in the Americas, providing models for advancing three flyway-scale initiatives (Atlantic, Midcontinent, and Pacific) at the site level. Our efforts at the selected sites will, for example:

Safeguard migration and wintering habitat for the rufa population of Red Knot (Calidris canutus);
Reduce disturbance to key roosting, foraging, and nesting sites;
Integrate shorebird conservation into working lands to provide new opportunities to provide safe and productive habitat;
Build constituencies for shorebird conservation for the long-term;
Target monitoring and research to inform habitat management decisions.

Coaliciones para la Conservación de las Aves Playeras

Actualmente las aves playeras están experimentando uno de los descensos poblacionales más dramáticos de cualquier grupo de aves en todo el mundo. Para implementar este trabajo, estamos involucrando a las comunidades y líderes locales y así generar apoyo para la conservación, creando oportunidades específicas para abogar por una mayor protección y tomar medidas conservación. Los socios locales incluyen organizaciones de conservación, agencias gubernamentales, financiadores, empresas, ganaderos, agricultores, y miembros de la comunidad. Al trabajar y aprender de nuestros socios en el sitio, juntos abordaremos las necesidades específicas de las aves playeras en estos 13 lugares clave.

Los esfuerzos dirigidos al sitio se ampliarán a nivel nacional e internacional a través de una estrecha colaboración con otras iniciativas de conservación y grupos, para ayudar a mejorar la capacidad de lograr objetivos de conservación comunes.

Socios

Con el apoyo de The BAND Foundation, Bobolink Foundation, R. Howard Dobbs Jr. Foundation, David and Lucile Packard Foundation, y el Programa de Socios para la Conservación de la National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (Fundación Nacional de Pesca y Vida Silvestre) en asociación con el Servicio de Conservación de Recursos Naturales del Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos, el Programa de Recuperación de Aves Playeras de Manomet está trabajando para conservar y manejar efectivamente hábitats críticos para las aves playeras en 13 sitios clave en las Américas.

Manomet y sus socios podrán ampliar las acciones para ofrecer soluciones transformadoras en todo el ciclo de vida de las aves playeras migratorias al conectar redes de sitios enfocadas en abordar las barreras para la conservación a nivel local y al mismo tiempo compartir el conocimiento y las lecciones aprendidas a través de las fronteras geopolíticas.

Objetivos

Catalizar acciones de conservación en 13 sitios específicos y así aumentar la salud y el número de aves playeras en las Américas, proveyendo modelos para avanzar tres iniciativas a escala de rutas migratorias (Atlántico, Mid-continental, y Pacífico). Por ejemplo, nuestros esfuerzos en los sitios seleccionados incluyen:

Salvaguardar la migración y el hábitat de invierno para la población rufa del Playero Rojizo (Calidris canutus);
Minimizar las perturbaciones en los sitios clave de descanso, alimentación, y reproducción;
Integrar la conservación de las aves playeras con las tierras productivas y así facilitar nuevas oportunidades que provean un hábitat seguro y productivo;
Crear una base de apoyo para la conservación de las aves playeras a largo plazo;
Enfocar el monitoreo y la investigación para informar las decisiones de manejo del hábitat.
