Duxbury, MA, March ,1 2019Duxbury Bay Maritime School (DBMS) and Sustainable Duxbury have joined Manomet, Inc. to host A Planet of Change: Understanding the World Around Us; a three-part speaker series taking place this spring. Each presentation features Manomet’s scientists, who will address some of the major environmental, social, and economic challenges New Englanders face in 2019, solutions on how to deal with these challenges, and what the future looks like for our planet.

“Sustainability, or, meeting the needs of today without compromising the well-being of future generations, is one of the most significant challenges of our time,” says John Hagan, Manomet President, who will be welcoming attendees at the March event. “To find solutions, we need to understand why this challenge is so complex.”

The series, which will be held at the DBMS campus in Duxbury, involves three separate presentations in March, April, and May 2019. From diversifying consumer palates to strengthen New England’s fisheries, to identifying local land as important habitat for migrating birds, to understanding the critical role for-profits play in building a more sustainable world, Manomet’s staff will provide ample real-world examples of these challenges on a local (and global) scale and how the organization works to provide impactful solutions.

“There are many shared values between these three organizations, but at the heart of it all is creating understanding and appreciation for the natural world.” says Ted Lawson, Executive Director of DBMS. “Manomet’s work, both locally and globally, is sure to shed light on issues facing our community and our Bay and how they are connected to global challenges. We are excited to bring these events to DBMS.”

“This series is an excellent opportunity for everyone to further their understanding of the consequences of global climate change on a local level,” says Jim Savicki of Sustainable Duxbury.
