Are you on the south shore of Massachusetts and looking to brush up on your shorebird identification skills?

Join Manomet Center Conservation Specialist Brad Winn in September for a two-part workshop to build your skills and then practice them in the field.

There will be an evening slide presentation on Wednesday, September 4, from 6:00 – 8:00pm at the Manomet Center’s headquarters in Plymouth, Massachusetts. During the presentation, participants will learn how to differentiate between some of the more challenging shorebird species such as the yellowlegs, dowitchers and sandpipers.

The presentation will include photos taken by Winn during his recent Arctic shorebird research expedition on Canada’s Coats Island.

On Saturday, September 7th, from 9:00am – 12:00pm, Winn will lead a shorebirding field trip at a local Plymouth, Massachusetts, beach for participants who want to practice what they have learned and hone their identification skills in the field.

The field trip will give participants an opportunity to practice identifying juvenile shorebirds as well as birds in the air. Both the workshop and field trip are suitable for intermediate to advanced birders. Beginners who attended the first workshop in May are encouraged to attend this workshop as well, as there will be some review to bring participants up to speed.

Winn recently returned from studying breeding shorebirds in the Canadian Arctic. He is also part of a collaborative Whimbrel tracking project that recently discovered a migratory connection for the species between Brazil and the western Gulf of Mexico. He delivers workshops for state and federal land managers across the U.S. on how to manage their lands for shorebirds.

Registration is required for each activity, and Manomet members receive a discount on registration costs.
