Discover the shorebirds of Cape Cod’s coast alongside Manomet shorebird biologists and conservation experts as we set out on an unforgettable shorebirding expedition to the remote southern tip of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
While Cape Cod may be a summer hotspot for people, it’s also one of the most important habitats for migrating shorebirds. August brings an incredible mix of species to these shores—Piping Plovers, Sanderlings, Ruddy Turnstones, Least Sandpipers, Black-bellied Plovers, Red Knots, and Whimbrels, to name just a few. Whimbrels, in particular, are preparing for an epic journey, flying more than 2,500 miles nonstop to the northern coast of South America. This is a rare opportunity to witness their final stopover before takeoff.
We’ll begin our trip at the Wequassett Resort & Golf Club in Harwich, Massachusetts, and travel by charter boat to southern Nauset Beach. There, we’ll stroll the shoreline in search of shorebirds while taking in the beauty and tranquility of this remarkable landscape.
As we watch flocks forage along the beach, you’ll hear from Manomet shorebird biologists about their work on Cape Cod and at the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, including satellite tracking of migratory shorebirds and how this research helps inform conservation efforts both locally and across the globe.
This is more than a birding trip—it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the rhythms of migration, learn from scientists on the front lines of conservation, and reconnect with the natural world in one of New England’s most spectacular settings.
Please Note: There are no docks at Nauset Beach. This excursion involves travel by boat and requires participants to board and disembark from the vessel in natural shoreline conditions, including wading through water up to knee depth. The terrain includes sand, uneven surfaces, and other outdoor environmental conditions. Participants will need to accept the nature of this experience and be willing to embrace the spirit of adventure that comes with exploring these unique coastal environments.
Cost: $99 per person.
