Join Lisa Schibley of Manomet for a small-group shorebird walk at Plymouth Beach during the peak of fall migration. Late summer and early fall can bring an impressive diversity of shorebirds to the area, including sandpipers, plovers, dowitchers, turnstones, and other migrants moving south from Arctic breeding grounds. Every year brings a few surprises as well.
Participants will meet at the public parking area at the base of Plymouth Beach and carpool to the crossover gate. From there, we will walk approximately 1 mile on sand to some of the best shorebird habitat on Plymouth Beach. Total walking distance will be about 2 miles round trip. Along the way, we’ll discuss identification, migration, behavior, and the conservation challenges facing these remarkable travelers.
With only five participants per outing, these walks offer an excellent opportunity for close observation, questions, and in-depth discussion. Registration is required.
Important notes:
- Approximately 2 miles of walking on sand.
- Participants should be comfortable walking on uneven beach terrain.
- Bring binoculars, water, sunscreen, and clothing appropriate for coastal conditions.
- Shorebird numbers and species vary with migration timing and weather, making each walk unique.
