July: Ruddy Turnstone
This Ruddy Turnstone, one of Manomet’s flagship species, was spotted at Plymouth Long Beach in mid-June during an International Shorebird Survey (ISS). Known for flipping over stones and debris in search of food, this hardy shorebird breeds in the Arctic and winters along coastlines worldwide. Despite its resilience, the species is in significant decline, and it’s largely understudied. Manomet scientists are working with university and nonprofit partners to better understand their flight, migration, and wintering habitats, research that will also benefit the rufa Red Knot, Sanderling, and Semipalmated Sandpiper.
