Germán Montero
Executive Director at Asociación Ambiente Sur
At the southernmost tip of the Americas, conservation takes on a different meaning. For more than two decades, Asociación Ambiente Sur has been building a model that places people—teachers, producers, students, and neighbors—at the heart of conservation.

In this Small Sit, Germán Montero will share how an innovative, multi-faceted approach has helped protect Patagonia’s unique ecosystems and extraordinary shorebird species such as the Red Knot and the Magellanic Plover.
This webinar is part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Río Gallegos Estuary as a WHSRN Site of International Importance — and a reflection on how community action can drive lasting change at the end of the world.

Through creative and community-based approaches—such as environmental education programs in schools, theatre performances, citizen science, and public campaigns celebrating local pride and shorebird conservation—Ambiente Sur has become a leading voice for conservation in southern Patagonia.

More about the Speaker
In 2007, Germán Montero co-founded Asociación Ambiente Sur to help people reconnect—actively and respectfully—with nature amid the rapid urbanization of Patagonia’s cities. The organization’s mission is to raise awareness and inspire citizen engagement with local and regional environments through environmental education, biodiversity conservation, and public advocacy in both the design and implementation of public policy.
