Guests experience the magic of this dramatically beautiful location, overlooking Cape Cod Bay where we welcome supporters, sponsors and friends for a lively and locally-sourced cocktail hour and dinner with a program highlighting stories from the field. This year we proudly featured Manomet’s next generation of program leaders sharing examples of our mission in action—applying science and engaging people to sustain our world. We also broke ground on our accessibility project—supporting the access of all students and groups to our headquarters. Summerfest is generously supported by our corporate sponsors highlighted throughout the magazine. To learn more about Summerfest please contact Bridget Alexander, Assistant Director of Development, at 508-224-6521 or balexander@manomet.org. Thank you to our Summerfest sponsors! in public health: environmental, social, and economic aspects in a community or region,” she explains.“And small businesses are a large contributor to a community’s culture and society.” Beyond just the valuable experience gained from interning with a nonprofit organization, the benefits for U360 students are numerous. They learn about the practical challenges and solutions for making small businesses and the world more sustainable, while also helping their interviewees shift from interested bystanders to active participants in the realm of sus- tainability. Says USM sophomore Brook Tracey,“Participating in the U360 program has allowed me to experience the reali- ties of a career in sustainable business, and I’m able to use the numerous skills I have learned from this program and apply them to my future goals.” Additionally, the students learn about aspects of sustain- ability that may not be covered in the classroom; strengthen their communication, networking, and analytic skills; and deepen their understanding of local businesses’ impacts on society. “The skills I am learning through U360 range from communication to over-the-phone and in-person interviewing, to contacting businesses about participation, as well as time management,” says USM junior Kassandra Girard. The participating small businesses also benefit both from their engagement with the students and from the Root360 tools they can utilize after their interviews. Root360 gives them a place to start—a way to benchmark their current practices and better understand how sustainability might fit into their business model. While more and more large companies are tackling sustainability, small businesses often don’t know where to begin. Sustainable practices can save a small business money and resources, enhance its long-term viability, reduce its risks and vulnerability, and increase its competitive advantage. Yet, focusing on sustainability is often a significant challenge for small business owners because of constraints on their time, money, and resources. Joe Walsh, the owner of Green Clean Maine, an all-natural cleaning service with 30 employees, gained valuable insight about his company from the interview and access to the Root360 toolkit: “Participating in the U360 interview process helped me get a true, holistic picture of where our small com- pany stands on our sustainability initiatives. While the data is quite useful, it’s the asking of the questions that I found most helpful. By asking the right questions, this group of bright, eager, and unassuming students has helped me productively reflect on some of the most important issues facing my busi- ness. The resulting Root360 sustainability analysis wraps up the process with focus and actionable takeaways.” U360 is mutually beneficial to Manomet, the students, the universities, and the participating businesses. “The students are really enthusiastic and eager to learn from the businesses they’re engaging with,” says Lora.“It’s exciting to provide them with exposure to real people who are questioning how to bal- ance sustainability with running a successful business, and I’m thrilled to help inspire the newest generation of sustainable entrepreneurs!” East Bridgewater • Green Harbor • Hanover • Hingham Marshfield • Norwell • Quincy • Scituate • Weymouth 800-695-1300 • CoastalHeritageBank.com formerly S-Bank and Scituate Federal Savings At Coastal Heritage Bank — this area defines us.
