Manomet is conducting research on carbon dynamics in old forests by re-visiting its research network of hundreds of permanent plots across northern Maine in conservation areas and managed forest.
Until recently, old forests were believed to either maintain carbon stocks in a steady state or even lose carbon. Recent global and region studies suggest that old forest may continue to sequester carbon until they are well over 400 years old. By re-measuring permanent plots, we will be able to investigate if this is true for forests in the northeast.
