Our goal: To conserve marine biodiversity and develop sustainable, selective fishing practices through applied scientific research into fish behaviors, fishing practices and conservation engineering.
Who are our partners: We work in close collaboration with commercial fishermen, state and federal agencies, local communities, private foundations and conservation organizations with interests in developing sustainable, selective fishing practices that allow for continued economic use of marine resources.
How do we work: We use applied scientific research into fish behaviors, fishing practices and conservation engineering to develop practical solutions to the complex challenges posed by declines in fish stocks and productivity of marine ecosystems. Our cooperation with commercial fishermen and other stakeholders is helping develop stronger, more productive relationships between scientists and the commercial fishing industry.
Where are we based: Manomet's Marine Conservation Program is based in Manomet, Massachusetts (Click here for a map and directions).
Where do we work: Our partnerships in marine science and fisheries technology extend globally. Currently, we are conducting active research from North Carolina to Iceland.
Current Projects: Our research describes and analyzes fish behavior and fishing gear selectivity. This enables us to develop gear and methods of fishing that are more efficient and better at targeting the desired species. Our projects have resulted in:
- Reduction of bycatch in small mesh squid fisheries and gulf of maine groundfish fisheries.
- Development of fish excluder devices for Northwest Atlantic groundfish trawl fisheries.
- Demonstration of temporal access to Closed Area II on George's Bank targeting yellowtail flounder.
We continue to develop strong, productive relationships between conservation scientists and the commercial fishing industry through cooperative projects, attendance at trade shows, and meetings with industry representatives.
