Position Summary
The Senior Program Leader will direct and grow a major new project on climate change adaptation with national implications. Working with stakeholders in four major rural landscape sectors and at two spatial scales, the Senior Program Leader will develop and implement strategies to build climate change resiliency into critical ecosystem services. The position reports to the Climate Change and Energy Initiative Director. The position is located at Manomet’s headquarters on the bluffs overlooking beautiful Cape Cod Bay, in Plymouth, MA, 45 miles south of Boston.
About Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences
Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences is a 40-year-old non-profit environmental research center dedicated to conserving natural resources for the benefit of wildlife and humans. Manomet’s perspective is that society’s economic, social, and environmental values are connected and must be integrated to find lasting solutions for a sustainable planet. We produce and synthesize scientific information that helps communities, businesses, and government make more informed decisions about natural resource sustainability. We are known for working side-by-side with landowners and land managers to put the best science to use on the ground. Our headquarters are located in Plymouth, MA and we have a satellite office in Brunswick, ME. With an annual budget of $4.3M and a staff of 32, Manomet offers an entrepreneurial atmosphere of dedicated professionals who support each other toward a common vision of creating a more sustainable planet.
About Manomet’s Climate Change and Energy Initiative
Manomet has built a cutting-edge program in climate change mitigation and adaptation in the past two years. Our focus has been on assessing the vulnerability of habitats, species, and ecosystems to climate change in the Northeast, assisting governmental agencies in developing “climate-smart” policy, integrating climate change adaptation into state wildlife management planning, and developing forest carbon offset markets for forestland owners. In the energy sector, we are working on developing “green grids” for new energy infrastructure, and evaluating the economic and environmental potential of using woody biomass for energy in Massachusetts.
A New Opportunity
With a $750,000 three-year grant from the Kresge Foundation, we are launching a major new project titled “Moving from Vulnerability to Resilience: Sustaining Ecosystem Services in the face of Climate Change.” With this project we will build climate change resiliency into ecosystem services, such as clean water, food production, clean air, wood, flood control, space for recreation, and wildlife, many of which are essential to human survival and well-being. We will work with four major sectors: forestry, agriculture (e.g., dairy, cranberries), rural residential development, and conservation lands. We will work at two spatial scales: the landowner scale and the landscape (county and watershed) scale. We will develop and implement practical adaptation strategies to help these sectors and landscapes become more resilient to climate change. This project will be recognized as a source for leadership in climate change adaptation in the U.S. for rural land use sectors.
The Senior Program Leader position offers great opportunity to develop a national reputation in climate change adaptation and to grow a lasting program in climate change adaptation at Manomet.
Essential Functions
The Senior Program Leader will be primarily responsible for successful execution and completion of the Kresge-funded project, but also for growing a program in climate change adaptation at Manomet with rural resource sectors. Specific responsibilities include:
1. Work closely with stakeholders to translate our scientific knowledge into climate change adaptation strategies and sustainable land management solutions.
2. Meet all project milestones and deliverables of the Kresge grant on time and with high standard of quality.
3. Build Manomet’s expertise, reputation, and capacity to develop climate change adaptation plans for sites and landscapes.
4. Design and implement a standardized process for creating climate change adaptation plans for the four sectors.
5. Select and manage consultants, as needed, to complete project deliverables (e.g., hydrology, GIS services) Manage support staff on the project. Work closely with staff in the Natural Capital Initiative who also contribute to this project and who are based in Manomet’s Brunswick, ME office.
6. Communicate to the public, government officials, civic groups, philanthropic foundations, and other interested individuals about the project and about climate change and climate change adaptation.
7. Work with the Director of Manomet’s Climate Change and Energy Initiative to track climate change policy in the Northeast and emerging national and international climate change policy, define new policy that increases the ability of rural landscapes to adapt to climate change, and assist the Director in identifying and realizing new opportunities for adaptation funding and research.
8. Help grow a program in practical on-the-ground climate change adaptation for Manomet.
9. Assist in raising new funding from donors, foundations, and government sources
Qualifications
• Broad background in natural resource policy/science, natural resource economics, landscape planning, rural development, and/or climate change adaptation.
• Master’s or Ph.D., preferably from a natural resource, resource economics, or sustainability program.
• Ability to work comfortably and respectfully with diverse landowners and stakeholders in the conservation and business sectors, especially forestry, agriculture, and residential development.
• Strong understanding of ecosystems and ecosystem services, as well as the economic interests of rural communities. A broad understanding of climate change science and policy is critical.
• Highly energetic, smart, a self-starter, motivated to build a professional reputation and program, able to work independently, and able to provide strong senior leadership within Manomet on climate change adaptation as it relates especially to economic sectors in rural landscapes.
• Demonstrated experience writing practical management plans for land parcels or landscapes a plus.
