The International Shorebird Survey seeks volunteers to reinstate surveys at former ISS sites where coverage has lapsed. Go to the International Shorebird Survey (ISS) pages to find out where:

Since 1974 the International Shorebird Surveys (ISS) has gathered information on shorebirds and the wetlands they use from volunteers. There are now over 50,000 census counts from more than 600 sites. These surveys help scientists better understand how various species depend on particular wetlands and migration corridors - and a critically important piece of information: many species of shorebirds depend on strategic migration staging sites. ISS data were used to form the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) in 1986.

Program for Regional and International Shorebird Monitoring” (PRISM)

The goals PRISM are to (1) estimate the size of breeding populations of 74 shorebird taxa in North America; (2) describe shorebirds’ distribution, abundance, and habitat relationships; (3) monitor trends in shorebird population size; (4) monitor shorebird numbers at stopover locations, and; (5) assist local managers in meeting their shorebird conservation goals. It has three main components: arctic and boreal breeding surveys, temperate breeding surveys, temperate non-breeding surveys, and neotropical surveys. PRISM is based on the shorebird conservation plans recently completed in Canada and the U.S. and provides a single blueprint for implementing both of these plans.
