A
Dedication Ceremony Speech in Suriname
The
public dedication ceremony of a new WHSRN site provides official
recognition to a site's critical importantce for shorebirds and
other wildlife. WHSRN encourages sponsors of newly created shorebird
sites to organize a public dedication cermony to:
- inform
the public of the site's unique international biological importance;
- foster
increased cooperation among local agencies, organizations and
individuals whose actions may benefit the site in the short and
long term.
The
responsibility for organizing the dedication ceremony rests principally
with the local reserve managers / owners. WHSRN can help provide:
- guidance
to organizers based on experience from previous WHSRN dedication
ceremonies regarding suggested programs, activities, speakers,
and procedures;
- a
WHSRN representative at the dedication ceremony (when possible)
- handout
materials (posters, brochures, fact sheets, etc. describing the
network, shorebirds and conservation issues;
- a
broader perspective illustrating the new site's importance to
shorebirds in a regional and hemispheric context;
- the
WHSRN banner plus official national flags from each participating
country (7) as a backdrip for public events;
- a
20" x 36" outdoor sin for the visitors center or entrance
(includes a hemispheric map with shorebirds and some text about
shorebird migrations and the importance of a WHSRN site as critical
habitat;
- videos
for display at the event and for local media/school/community
outreach;
- samples
of invitations, programs, ceremony plans, etc.
